Wimbledon’s first recorded match was against Richmond in November 1865, making the club one of the oldest in the country, and one of just twelve surviving clubs that founded the RFU in 1871. The club played on Wimbledon Common until World War 1, using the Rose & Crown in Wimbledon Village as changing rooms and clubhouse. The club’s move to its current clubhouse in Barham Road , off Copse Hill, coincided with the launch of league rugby in Britain in 1987/88.
Today Wimbledon fields four men's teams with the 1st XV playing in London South 1. Together with the Ladies, Vets, Mini's and Youth sections, the club caters for players of all ages and abilities. The club additionally helps to organize various sporting events such as the Wimbledon 10k charity run.
This season marks a landmark season for Wimbledon as it will see the opening of its new clubhouse extension in November. It’s also a landmark year for the Ladies team as they celebrate their 20th season. Season 2009-10 proved to be a very successful year for the ladies team as they finished top of their league and also won the inaugural Surrey Cup. They now play in Championship South East 2.
